Curves Ahead.

I will post more about this tomorrow or Friday, but check out V magazine's cover shoot with plus size models. These women are gorgeous and redefining the idea that thin equals sexy. What do you all think?

I think I'm tired of "plus size" model shoots in which said models are either naked or wearing unflattering garments.

Massive fail, IMO.

Sums it up:

I feel really out of the loop because I didn't know IMO. Moving on.

Yes, it would be nice to see them in something really really flattering, but the title of the shoot was "curves ahead". The clothes show off their curves. It also bugs me that the blog post you mentioned wanted the models to wear flowing outfits, almost as if to say that they should hide their bodies.

I don't like the idea that all women models have to show uber revealing outfits, but I feel like the plus size models in this shoot are in outfits that are extremely attractive. It would have been nice to see a variety of outfits, but I don't want to hide their larger size either. The post you referenced almost mentioned that they wanted the women to "hide" their curves or stomachs. I am a size 16 and until this shoot I had always looked at my rolls and fat as something that was ugly. This photo shoot (objectifying as it may seem) let me look at my larger figure as extremely attractive. It made ME see myself in a new light.

I can see your point, definitely. Curves were there, indeed, but I think that they were framed in a bad way. The jeans with no shirt, for example--an ill fit (the jeans) and kind of odd looking (the lack of top). The leotard. The weird bathing suit with the knot on the navel (I don't have the pictures up anymore so this is from memory).

I forgot to include any context for the blog I linked. Apologies. ProjectRungay is written by two bitchy gay men (a couple, Tom and Lorenzo) who post on fashion, fashion-oriented TV, and a few other things. They have a discerning take on fashion with which I don't always agree, but almost always find interesting.

I don't know much about fashion in a scholarly sense, but the flowing comment was probably not to do with hiding anything, but rather a comment on how all the clothes were skin-tight, ill-fitted and/or absent. I think they look trashy. If the photo spread consisted of tasteful nude portraits, the models would look classier.

Did you read about the model in Glamour? She's a size 12, semi-nude, with a belly pooch and a smile. It made news, for some reason. I personally think she looks gorgeous.

There is soooo much shit we could say about how the fashion industry negatively affects women. While I was looking at these photos I paid less attention to what they were wearing than I did their bodies. I'm not really sure that high fashion is supposed to be flattering. Honestly, I frequently find it to be really weird and impractical.

I appreciated seeing models who didn't have flat stomachs, skinny legs etc. It made me wonder how women would feel about their bodies if more images like this were mixed in with everything else we see.. food for thought I guess.

If I had any criticism I guess it would be that there could have been more women of color represented/different ethnicities. And yeah... I get tired of women being naked all of the time. But I think if they'd all be clothed than the message would have been that big girls need to cover it up. Not sure how to get around that..
